The military something. It didn't matter whether you got drafted for the land forces, navy or airfloating (literal translations) - once you were there, you were in vojska, i.e. "u JNA" (a pun, because ujna means mother's brother's wife, an aunt of that particular kind).
The three branches (where the navy included "rečna mornarica" - litrally, "river marines", but then we had also actual marines, called "naval infantry", who belonged to the navy but wore SMB, gray olive uniforms with naval berets on top) were called "rodovi" - which accidentaly means gender as well. And then in the mid-eighties, for a few years they were accepting women in voluntary service. The usual dialog now got this turn:
- Did you serve the army?
- I did.
- Which rod?
- Male.
