20-XI-1979.: Graduated!

Last exam, passed with a 9, functional analysis. Luckily, the grade was earned on the written part of the exam, and the task was one of those that I liked, with a theme going all the way through. That was the style of several professors, a kind of glassperlenspiel, a single theme which would take you through several areas of the course. Not much work was required, but you had to show understanding and knowledge. A fine and elegant end.

As it was customary with this professor, who was the rector of the whole university at the time, if you got at least 8 on the written, you could keep it and skip the oral. The oral may have questions about Lebeg's or Stiltjes' integrals, which nobody really understood anyway, and to which there weren't any practical things to do on the written part. Most of the students didn't even learn these, they'd do the practical part until they got an 8.

When the professor wrote the grade into my index, I asked for a little favor. As this was the last exam, and there's nothing more to write there, and the whole index can be read as one long sentence (has enrolled, has attended... has passed exam...), I'd like to have one Q.E.D. with his signature below. He was first surprised that I didn't tell him I'm graduating, he would have awarded me a 10, then congratulated me, and then indulged to my request.

Until today (2020) I was convinced that this happened on 19th. But looking at my index, it says 20th. Go figure.
