Dom omladine

(Place, tavern, firm, Yugoslavia)

Literally, the youth home (youth being "the young"). The building was austro-hungarian officers' home originally, with some fancy façade work, little towers, a round wing facing the river, smack downtown, with the hotel and gimnazija on the other bank.

Was torn down in 1974 and next year there was a fancy new building, with also interesting architecture, but it didn't feel even remotely the same. First off, couldn't smoke inside for the first two years, because the warranty included carpets (!)... carpets? Is this supposed to be like a hotel now? And the big hall where bands should play has seats and is shaped as an amphitheater - where to dance? And it was renamed into "Dom mladosti" - the home of youth (youth being that period of life when one is young). And a couple of decades later it was renamed again into Kulturni centar (culture center) . The old Dom had just one office, for the manager; this one had two rows of them - the original DBA got a couple, so technically I worked there for a year.
