My response to Ford:

"Well, nicely surprised. I was always afraid I'll have to take my first overseas job in some monster metropolis.

The steps? It's whatever the visa takes - I've gained most of the information from http://travel.state.gov/visa_services.html and http://travel.state.gov/visa_services.html/#emp

Also, there are some people on the UA who have promised some help with the visa; maybe I'll simply put you together, may you find the quickest way to get it. My family will stay at home for at least a year or more, so provisions need to be made for one person only. This will probably make things easier. I've never been to the States; I'm no airport illiterate though - we've travelled around Europe a lot, back until 1990 (last year of decent living here). Nevertheless, I'd surely need someone to take me from the airport to your site, and a place to stay for first few weeks - possibly not too far from your building, until I get accustomed with the environment, transportation etc. I expect that in few weeks time I'd come out of any possible accomodation troubles. I've been through that already, so I don't expect problems. Another thing is that I'll probably be nearly peniless for those few weeks, when I calculate my current reserves and the probable costs of travel, so some travelling and/or settlement aid could be welcome, though not mandatory.

BTW, what's the proposed salary? I think we may switch to exchanging mail twice a day - I can access the Net some time at the beginning of your working hours, and once more at the end of it. Actually, I can do it all day, but it's either the lines are too busy, or the rates are higher (my ISP is 50 miles away, so I have to dial inter-city), or both. In case there's any necessity to exchange snail-mail or phone calls, here's the address:"

Hi, remember this?

Well, I've finally got one affirmative 10-4 answer from Zero (I think their ad is still on the UA). Now, I think I'd have to move fast. What do I have to do now? What do I have to do now *before* calling your father? Does the distance mean anything - this is in Virginia, and you're in Florida. I love to do things slowly when I can, but this time I think I'd rush this visa thing. I've downloaded http://travel.state.gov/visa_services.html#emp article and a couple of others, is there anything else I should know in advance?

See you for a beer at the next DevCon, *if* this works :)

I'll connect again by midnight - should be 4-5PM your time. I'll send this now.

(not that I ever made it to any DevCon, but also never met the guy in person)
