The starchery. Actually, starch was their low-level product, they made whatever could be made out of corn - dextrose, dextrose-based condiments, corn oil (and then margarine etc)... and the unused parts went to the cattle fodder factory, stuck between it and the river, in the backyard.
While their primary line was production of components for the rest of kombinat, they had other interesting things. Many of us remember the so-called potato sugar, which were some flat shards of something seemingly hard, of creamy yellow color, with smooth reflective surface. The color was similar to yellow tomato, hence the name, although the only raw material they ever used was corn. It stuck to teeth a bit, then melted in [your] moith, was slightly sweet and quite cheap, considering that it was a discarded thing, brought for free by anyone who worked there, and everyone knew one.
The other item was dextrin, i.e. some kind of confection with dextrose, which easily melted in [your] mouth and were somehow refreshing, and the better version of it, deksi juice, crystalline powder sold by [the] kilo. We took one bag of that to Sutomore (v. 18-VIII-1993.), which was a true miracle, how those crystals cooled down the water as they thawed, three spoons of it, with tepid water, gave a liter of cool juice.
The third product was actually a semiproduct, the corn molasses, aka „wisdom stone“ (known as philosopher's in the west), which dad's vineyard gang employed at large to increase the amount of rakija (mostly loza, though there were other kinds as well), who knows how much did they use, they'd get a barrel of it each season, and then split that among themselves.
It was driven to bankruptcy by the usual maneuvers, througout the late nineties and the next decade. Later named KuPro, see there.
