A kombinat was any larger group of factories, land or other production facilities turned into a single large enterprise. My city had a rather famous one, producing mostly food. It began around a sugar refinery (after which my area was named), then got the starchery, power plant, edible oil refinery, brewery, dairy, meat processing (where my dad worked), cattle fodder, city bakery, trucks & transportation, computing centre, commerce (where my mom worked), its own land, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics...
With the wanton destruction of all industry in the nineties and 2000s, it got disbanded and most of the production ceased. Individual factories were privatised to shady characters, who'd stop paying the workers, sell machinery, fail to bring the capital they promised in the contract but instead got them into debt; the sinking debts would lead into bankruptcy or a stretched agony. Now (2012) the brewery (older than Guinness by 20 years) makes no beer; the butchery is overgrown with weeds; the starchery is rented out as storage space; sugar refinery is to start making corn syrup (didn't materialize - some four years later it finally started making straw pellets for fuel); the pharmaceutical is owned by small holders (i.e. workers) after a long struggle against one of the scum businessmen who allegedly owned it for a number of years and there's a political push to make a new one on the other end of town (so this one should be shut down first). The surviving ones are the dairy (sold to the French) and the edible oil refinery (that the former CEO practically stole by taking himself lots of stock awarded to dead or former workers, escaped justice and then sold it to someone from Croatia).
