I've spent about three hours flattening my ears on a series of 800 numbers just to get the phone running (why the hell do they have online ordering when you still get nowhere until you call them), plus another three times with an hour or more to get DSL. And they didn't even tell me what's my number - and guess what, it's not the number they gave me online. Had to call Go's cell so she could tell me from which number I called.

Got an assignment at Orion to do server banking. Knowing that the system frequently operates over a large area, where network may break at any time, so any data acquired may need to be stored locally at first, then sent to the server when network is reestablished, I initially thought this is something about having a whole server bank and somehow consolidating the data on them.

It turned out that the server, in this context, is not a computer, but a waiter. And the banking is... well, about cash that waiter carries in his purse. And about multiple waiters having a single machine at the bar, where they register their sales and cash, and totaling this at the end of the shift. Turned out to be a neat little assignment. I learned a lot about the functioning of a bar, specially how the tips are split (how does the kitchen get a share, in percentage or otherwise, is a matter of agreement).

We tried to schedule testing for Lena to get into a magnet middle school, but later it turned out that we should have done it in april. Bugger. She got into that beach middle school, which was literally three blocks from the ocean, and completely sports oriented. All the halls were lined up with photos of school teams and various cups hey earned. Not a single scientist or artist to be seen anywhere.

Meanwhile, she got into drawing manga, which I sometimes scan and send to my mom and dad. She's not completely imitating the style, though, her girls have pointed ears, long legs and pretty good overall design.
