The indestructible setkey.prg gets another instance, and this is where I think my version begins to differ from mainstream of Sale. I'm removing all of the OnKeyLabel calls (so the hotkeys would be set by app specific code and not by the code set globally in this), so the thing actually becomes a misnomer: it does not set (hot) keys any more. It also doesn't launch the menu either, that's what tmenu.prg is for (which is building the menu on the fly from the menu.dbf, instead of relying on menus generated from the same table).
The setkey.prg was, for five years now, the general routine to set up the environment in an app, and as such it was part of the framework (first the DBA's, then my GenerAll). I kept using it until 2019, but to set my work environment (kill everything, set paths, launch my favorite add-ons), not inside any app.
Officially, there was a denomination today, another nine zeros. Nobody really cares, the news is as if of yesterday's snow. Later, the whole monetary insanity of 1993 will be discounted - i.e. when calculating the average of anything, this year does not count. Not for retirement staž, for example. The time counts, but your 1993 salary is not taken into calculation of your average.
Around the end of the new year's weekend, most likely tuesday the fourth, Vlasta sent some guy to install the thermostat. We already had everything, the thermostat came from our TA (which we brought in parts and shelved it in the basement), which we eventually screwed to the end of the wall between kitchen and daily room, where the passage between them begins, and the cable was already in the flex tube in the floor, then through Johan's room and tunnel into the basement. The kid, actually an engineer, just came to connect it all.
It wasn't operating perfectly, because such thermostats control a fan which blows over some hundred liters of heating body, where the hystheresis is not as great, the delay in either direction is not too big. When it detects cool, it starts to blow and reaches the temperature within half an hour, which then keeps for an hour or two. This, however, is almost eight thousand liters of heating body, so the delay measues in hours. But there it was, it still worked better than electrovalve coupled with thermistors that he put there, and now at least we had some gauge on the dial to rely on. After several days of experimenting, we decided that the perfect point is at its 15 degrees (who knew what would that actually be). If you dial it lower, you'll wait longer to warm up, and if you dial it higher, it'll warm up for longer and then you'll wait longer for it to cool off, and won't even notice when it's already cold, then you'll wait... The fifteen was good enough, the difference between the on and off points wasn't more than about three degrees, which was quite okay. And our feet weren't cold anymore. Lastly, and importantly, we didn't slip into cold footware in the morning, the warmth now held until we got there, wherever there was. It's a song, bro.
One saturday, this 8th or 15th, I got wind from somewhere that on former Lasta's [bus] statio, where the dairy had a shop now, there's milk. Mounted my bike nad sped there. It's not far, maybe 4km, and the temperature wasn't too bad, no lower than -8.
The snow had already mostly thawed, the only screwy part was at the end, where they didn't clean it, and the pressed layers on the parking were frozen, thick and wavy. I had a strong canvass tote, probably she sewed it. I waited in a queue outside for about half an hour, plus some twenty minutes inside. At least I thawed too, it was sunny and all those glass panes served that. When it was my turn, I asked for six liters. The clerk lady gave me a morose look and squeezed out „we give only two liters“. „You give? And me, the fool, brought money“.
Give what you may, at least those two liters. The milk was in bags, allegedly 2,8% of milk fat, which I seriously doubt, it did happen that a peasant bought 50 bags and submitted it as his own, and they measured it at 1,4%. He insisted on repeat measuring, this milk must have 2,8%. On third try they asked why does he insist on 2,8, „well it says so on your bags“.
And even those 1,4, wo knows what it was. We later heard from someone from the dairy that they routinely skim it and add margarine, to have fat content.
