lada

(Machine, USSR)

The famous descendant of Fiat 124 (which was the european car of the year... 1967), it was manufactured in USSR with very few technical changes and even fewer cosmetic makeovers. It's still the same old angular box as it always was, with a rough stick shift, which required some muscle, a regular gas guzzler, and it would run pretty much forever, as long as there was someone to fix it. It was endlessly fixable, and came with a huge assortment of tools - jack, pump, pressure gauge, wrenches etc.

Avai had one periodically in 1998, when fregata was repaired we'd get this as a loan. When the guy gave up on trying to fix the fregata, we swapped finally and kept the lada. It stayed in the office until about 2003, when I was asked to send a statement where I'd agree that it be sold.
