yugo

(Translation, Yugoslavia)

The only yugoslav made car which made it into american movies (and roads). We had four of them in DBA and the fifth was a pickup version, two-seater with a plastic dome behind. Despite the bad press and moronic jokes from the US, if you were lucky (and we mostly were) it was a good car, could run really fast when needed. The only two downsides, IMO, was the noise and the front seats, which would hurt in exactly same place each time after about 90 minutes, driving or shotgun.

I guess it's still made - I see the new ones, with extra plastic to make the boxy 1970s design a bit rounder, but then they could be a few years old. "New" is relative.

The word also means a citizen of SFRY (and FRY later) when abroad or in such context. We never called ourselves so among ourselves, but did elsewhere.
