mirko

(Machine, Yugoslavia)

A microwave oven. The explanation for the name is at 10-XII-1980..

Briefly, Mirko is a male name (akin to Placido, translated). Mikrotalasni is microwave, adjective. Mirkotalasni is a typo (see Siške), but we liked it. Hence the nickname.

To differ from hasan, which is a slicer's nickname (two kinds - the wrongly called processor and the salami cutter), which were named hasan one and hasan two, in order of appearance (so the salami cutter was #2 while in the US and #1 here), a mirko is more of a generic name for any microwave as such, not for any particular specimen.

And we bought a bunch of those. The aforementioned Toshiba from Niš, then one by the end of 1999, which lasted three years, another one for about two, and then yet another one in 2004, the cheapest, which is still functional for all I know, saw it on skype in 2018. Then one for the girls to have in Richmond, one when we returned. Then that one got retired to the garden, to make coffee there, when it became too noisy and was at home replaced with a new one. And each one was a mirko.

In the late teens the word mirkotalasni also got applied to microfiber cloth. Comes to mouth easily, at least to me. She tries to correct me every odd year.
