trabant

(Machine, Germany)

Make that East Germany, i.e. DDR. Look it up anywhere, the beasts are indestructible and easy to repair. There were cases of engine taken out, dismantled, fixed, reassembled and reinserted - somewhere in the middle of the road, with just tools found in the trunk. The chassis was sheet metal floor, tubes for a frame, and plastic sheating for everything else - hood, roof, doors, corners. The engine was two cylinder, two cycle, and it didn't have. Whatever anyone asks, in the usual shape of "does Trabant have a...?" the answer was firm no. No, it doesn't have a fuel pump, uses gravity and a little valve you open from the cabin. No it doesn't have water pump, uses air to cool. No it doesn't have oil pump, it's a two-stroke, no distributor, the platinum buttons are on the transaxle.

But it had digital fuel gauge! The dipstick had digits embossed on it.

It required absolutely no special instructions for the rear windows. For most of the other things, there was some "look, this goes only like this". All in all, a car (to which word five guys would jump and exclaim "good idea, a car would be much better!") which was very hard to like.
